Evidence-based medicine sounds like a really, really good idea. I mean, if I was going to put a chemical into my body that would radically alter my biochemistry, I’d certainly want to know it was backed by some good, solid science. Wouldn’t you?
Well, as Shakespeare famously wrote in Romeo and Juliet, “A Rose by Any Other Name Would Smell as Sweet.” You can call a duck a swan, but it won’t give it a long, elegant neck. Just because you come along with a catchy moniker (“EBM”) doesn’t mean it does what it says on the tin. Here’s how the promise of forcing objectivity on prescribing has failed…
