Hi guys, still taking a break from posting about Pharma. As a side-project I have been rewriting my (2018) eBook Procrastination Annihilation as I only ever put it out on kindle and I want something we can hold in our hands. Over 3000 peole downloaded it when I put it out and I’ve been meaning to update it for paperback but I kept putting it off. Lol geddit? Anyway, it’s one of these side-projects that when I started it I thought “this will be easy, it should only take a month or two, because most of the work is already done,” but of course it has taken on a life of it’s own and I’m happy with that because it’s really fun and doesn’t involve any research. Here is an excerpt for you to enjoy and hopefully make use of. If you like it please buy the kindle version of procrastination annihilation on amazon. It’s only 25,000 words long, it’s an enjoyable read, and it will help keep the lights on around here. 1. All or Nothing Thinking
“It’s all or nothing – and nothing’s all I ever get.”
– Meatloaf and Jim Steinman
When you’re stuck in a rut it’s easy to imagine that everything must change at once otherwise it’s pointless to even try. Small improvements may seem trivial in the face of what must be accomplished. Plus, even if you get off to a flying start today, you might not trust yourself to keep the momentum going tomorrow.
The truth is that victory against procrastination is not achieved simply by getting things done, because there will always be something more to do! Rather, you win by making little changes in the way you operate day-to-day that add up to a complete change in your strategy and outlook over time.
Procrastination is a psychological phenomenon that goes way beyond the inability to get yourself to do what you ought to do when you want to do it. It governs your habits. It stops you from being able to enjoy leisure time (because you don’t feel you’ve “earned it.”) It affects all aspects of your attitude because you can’t escape an unlived life. It’s always there in the background, calling.
That means if you want to overcome procrastination, you must understand the causes of your procrastination. Those subtle knots of interrelated thought patterns and habits that motivate your behavior. Separate them out one by one so you can replace each of them with more productive attitudes that support you in your efforts to handle your business. This is not going to happen overnight, but you don’t need to complete the process to start seeing the benefits of it either. Hold tight.
Imagine updating the hardware in your old desktop computer. You might have a weak link in there that’s slowing the whole thing down. So, you take it to the shop and replace it. But after that, the machine runs so much smoother that you start to wonder if there’s anything else you can upgrade… A little tinker here, a little tinker there… Before you know it, you have a brand-new machine! It looks the same, but it runs differently. A few hiccups along the way, but now it hums like a bird and effortlessly accomplishes complex tasks that it could barely cope with before.
Your mind is the computer. You can’t throw the whole thing out and start again, but you can become aware of mechanisms that slow down your progress and replace them. Even once you are fairly satisfied with how things are going, the show goes on. You get pretty handy with a screwdriver and start “operating” upon yourself for fun, out of self-esteem, because you enjoy it, because you like yourself, rather than because you are suffering so much you can’t take it. As I once put it on social media:
“I used to work on myself to get out of the pain, now I work on myself to get into the joy.”
